Kvarnberget, or The mill hill in english. So I absolutely adore the roof top view of this specific area of Gothenburg and I’ve been wanting to paint it for a while.
Some brief history:
During the 1600 two mills was built on this hill for the citizens of Gothenburg to grind their grain without having to travel to Mölndal (a neighbour town with watermills). During 1700 housing was built on the hill and in the 1800 the mills was no longer in use. 1841 a school was built on the top which later became a navigation school for shipping.
The characteristic tower with the mast has a time ball mounted on top. The ball was dropped at a specific time every day (usually 12:00 mid day) so the ships in the harbour could set their marine chronometers, which was the tool used for determination of the longitude at sea. How cool?
